What is Opus 5?

Claude Opus 5 is Anthropic's latest Opus-tier LLM, released July 24, 2026. It upgrades the prior Opus 4.8 generation with gains in agentic coding, computer use, long-horizon knowledge work, and mathematical/scientific reasoning. The model supports 1M token context, 128k max output, thinking enabled by default, and mid-conversation tool changes. It is positioned as near Fable 5 intelligence at the same pricing as Opus 4.8 and serves as the new default on Claude Max.
